Puppy Mills (also known as Puppy Farms outside of the United States) are large-scale dog breeding facilities that operate under substandard breeding conditions that provoke the development of chronic health problems, temperament issues, and hereditary defects.
The term can be applied to operations involving other animals irresponsibly bred for profit, i.e. "kitty mills." Animals that have been produced in mills are most commonly sold at pet stores to unsuspecting consumers.
Puppy mills are nothing new. Not all puppies are in the US either. Thousands of dogs are smuggled into the country from all over. There are usually the suppliers for pet stores. Never buy from a pet store. These mass dog-breeding operations have been around for decades. They continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who are smitten by very-cute-for-words puppies in pet store windows.
But behind the friendly facade of the local pet shop or the neighborhood newspaper ad, there often lies a puppy mill. These canine breeding facilities house dogs in shockingly poor conditions.
Life is particularly bad for "breeding stock," dogs who live their entire lives in cages and are continually bred for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. These dogs receive little or no veterinary care and never see a bed, a treat or a toy. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems.
It is very important that as pet owners that you educate yourselves. Buy a puppy directly from a reputable breeders. Someone who cares about you and their dogs. Never buy a puppy from a bad situation because you feel sorry for it. Report the conditions to the proper authorities. Authorities neglect and cruelty are against the law and we have a civic duty to report. Do not financially support such activities.
Spay/Neuter your pets. If they are not show quality or breeding quality, then spay them and encourage others to spay/neuter their pets. There are too many homeless and uncared for mongrels out there.
Breed a animal is not a Pot Luck situation. A lot of careful thought and planning goes into producing breed, well tempered and healthy dogs. The reality of the situation is this... if you pay a cheap price, you will get a cheap dog that may end up many of health problems and costing you more than you can imagine. Reputable breeders know that in order to produce quality puppies. They have to spend money on the care and fully love of their parents and puppies.
If you don't know what a puppy mill is... go to this link. You will see how cruel and inhumane some puppy can be...
We do not sell our puppies to any puppy mills or pet stores or brokers!!!
We do ask many questions about the new owners before placing our lovely puppies to be happy life forever.
